We get this question a lot. Here is our view: Are there born doctors, architects, violinists, and accountants?
People are born with very specific physical characteristics, different levels of intelligence, emotional intelligence and personality traits. The environment, family, education and worldly experiences help shape these people as they grow from toddlers to adults.
Some of them become leaders without any specific leadership or management training. Others are forced into leadership positions as a result of life and death events (War), while others specifically seek out leadership roles and learn on the job.
The end result of all of this is that anyone can become a leader. Some need more experience, while others need to be taught or coached on how to become a leader. We have seen people from all walks of life become great leaders, simply because they wanted to and sought help in developing the skills and insights needed for the role.
So, the short answer to the question is as follows:
All leaders are born, but they must all learn how to lead.
